What to Get in Harajuku, for Your Friends Back Home

Tokyo is a gigantic toy box full of everything. I know a lot of my friends who visited me here in Tokyo say “hmm… so what should I really buy from my….?” I just found a cool shopping bag at the famous Laforet, the mecca of Harajuku fashion chaos.

東京は、おもちゃ箱をひっくり返したみたいにたくさんの物で溢れてる。海外から遊びに来る友達は、決まって「おみやげ、どうしよう」って悩んでる。次にそんな外国人に出会ったら、これをオススメしてみようかな。みんな大好き東京の観光スポット、ラフォーレ原宿, のエコバッグ。

It’s a cotton tote bag to save the paper bags when you shop around. I believe the design changes every once in a while. Plus you can only buy it here at Laforet.

コットンのシンプルなエコバッグなのだけど、デザインもいつも変わるし、なんせラフォーレ原宿でしか買えない限定感が、海外からの観光客には嬉しい気がするの。

The BEST part about it is how you buy the bag. You will totally enjoy this automated system.

そしてなにより、このバッグを買うときの中途半端なハイテク自動式な感じ。まさに日本。ハイテク国家の匂いがするのです。こんなシステム、ないよ？海外に。

All you have to do is to put in 300 yen (3.00USD) in the machine and there you have a bag. How Tokyo !! How Green !! How Chic!! So much better than a T-shirts with the scary Kabuki face!!

300円入れるだけで買えるハイテク（？）自動販売機の限定エコバッグ！なんて東京らしい！なんてエコ！！なんてサレオツ！！あなたの外国人フレンドも喜ぶこと間違いなし！ わけわからない漢字が書いてあるTシャツよりも、きっと喜ばれるから！！

Folks Get Loud in the Sunshine

LAの友人の結婚式前日に行われたピクニックでのピニャータ。ピニャータは、メキシコの誕生日会なんかで現れる、くす玉みたいなモノね。

So this time, Mario was the victim.

犠牲者は、マリオだった。

スイカ割り、みたいなもんですね。

I love how kids get super excited to smack Mario around.

ものすごく一生懸命マリオを叩く！！

B&B Best Choice in Brooklyn

I love Brooklyn. I really do. My favorite area in Brooklyn is Cobble Hill/Carrol Garden area. Beautiful brown stones and great restaurants/bars on Smith street… I just have so many good memories in the area.

ニューヨークのブルックリンと一言に言っても、実はものすごく広い。９０年代のヒップホップのPVに出てくるような地域ももちろんブルックリンらしい、のだけど、私が大好きなエリアが、Cobble Hill/Carrol Gardenあたりのエリア。ブルックリン・ブリッジからすぐ南、地下鉄で言うと、F/GトレインのBergen St. あたり。閑静な住宅地は歴史的なブラウンストーンの造りが本当に美しい。

The brownstone buildings are so beautiful, I only prefered to live in brownstone when used to live in Brooklyn.

ブラウンストーンは、１９世紀に建てられた、その名の通り石造りの住宅で、ブルックリンでよく見られる。天井が高くて、風通しがよく、冬は暖かい。私がNYCに住んでいた頃は、ブラウンストーンにしか住みたくないと思ったほど。Smith st.には、個性的なレストランやバーが建ち並び、ボテガと呼ばれるデリや、近年ではセレクトショップなんかもユニークなブランドあつかってたり、とにかく最高な地域なのです。

When I travel alone to abroad, I usually stay at B&B. I love the personal touch of the facilities and staying at B&B always makes me feel close to the neighborhood. AND it’s always nice cuz I always travel on the budget.

一人で海外旅行は、もう何度も経験しているのだけど、B&B (ベッド＆ブレックファーストという日本で言う民宿みたいな宿)に泊まるのが、一人の時は大変都合が良い気がする。ホテルの無機質な感じと違って、個性的な空間や、その土地と身近に接する感覚、あと、とにかく安いという点で本当におすすめ。

I was so proud to find Escape Guesthouse on Bergen street, just two blocks away from the station.

今回見つけたB&Bは、本当に素晴らしかった。近くに１０年住んでいる知人も知らなかった、まさに穴場的隠れ家。駅からも２ブロックのEscape Guesthouse、これ絶対おすすめ

This is the louge area. I love the high-ceiling… Nice light coming in from the street.

ラウンジはオープンな空間。ブラウンストーンらしい高い天井、外からの木漏れ日が静かに入り込みます。

I hear many musician stay here. May be you get to hear some private jazz session if you are lucky?

土地柄のせいか、ミュージシャンがステイする事が多いそう。運が良ければ、プライベートなジャズセッションが聴けたりするのかも？

Here is the room I stay. Cozy and comfortable. You get fresh towels and basic amenity is all there in the bathroom.

私が泊まったお部屋はこんな感じ。小さいけど、居心地が良い。自分の部屋のような感じ。 清潔なタオルと、シャンプーやドライヤーなど基本的なものは全部そろってます。

The breakfast is nice and simple. I like eggs n stuff for breakfast, but I’m traveling alone, I also like to grab something light and quick, to get on my foot early in the morning.

ベッド＆ブレックファーストなんだから、朝食も付きますよ。豪華でヘビーな朝食も大好きですけど、一人旅で朝からたくさん動きたい時は、こんな風にささっと食べられる焼きたてベーグルが最適。絞り立てオレンジジュースとコーヒーも。

The house keeper person was really nice too. You will be surprised how expensive the hotels in Brooklyn can get. I highly recommend this place.

ハウスキーパーの女性もすっごく優しい。一人でゆっくり、自分のペースで観光したい人には本当におすすめ。普通のホテルと比べてもビックリするほど安いしね。
